Held on
   Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th June --12 noon to 12 noon
at the Northwood Stadium, Keelings Road, Hanley ST1 6PA

The Relay for Life 2008 event was held starting Midday Saturday to Midday Sunday 15th June at the Northwood Athletic Stadium in Stoke-on-Trent. One of the objects of the event is to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
TDARS was invited to establish a special event station by Katrina G0PLB an ex club member and involved with Relay for Life.  Don M0FHM and Bob M0RJS (your scribe for this treatise) took up the challenge.  Both arrived on site mid morning on Saturday and had established an HF station and VHF/UHF station in plenty of time for the start with the callsign GB0RFL.
It was intended that the station would be of interest to some of the event’s participants as well as advising a wider audience of its aims.  We hoped that, as the event coincided with Museums on the Air, there would be a large number of active UK stations.  Perhaps there were but we did not hear them.  Propagation conditions were as bad as all three of us have ever known.  It was only when Katrina called CQ that any response was achieved at all!  This, of course, has nothing to do with the fact that she is an XYL!
35 or more teams consisting of adults and children of all ages took part by ensuring that at least one member was running, jogging, walking, crawling, otherwise moving or being moved on the track for the whole of the 24 hours.  Members of each team were sponsored prior to the event and over £25,000 was raised.  Many of the teams’ members are cancer survivors – highlighting the fact that Relay for Life is a Celebration of Cancer Survival thus demonstrating the progress and success of research and why it is very important to continue to raise monies for Cancer Research UK.
Don & I were very impressed with all aspects of the event and humbled by the extraordinary dedication of every person that we met.  It was also good fun.  We hope to take part next year and intend to persuade more TDARS members to participate.

This year it is Stoke-on-Trent Relay's 10th anniversary. We intend to make it the BEST EVER.  Each year we have seen an increase in people attending. Cancer is something that affects  everyone's life in one way or another. With the help of people like you we can together make  a huge difference and raise lots of money for Cancer Research UK.
Throughout the event lots of fun activities take place and help to create a carnival atmosphere.
As the celebrations are in full swing members of each team take turns to walk around the track for 12 – 24 hours. This marks the fact that cancer never sleeps. But you don’t have to be in a team to come down & join in just come & have some fun.
